My Dog

I got him as a puppy, I loved him at first sight
A cheeky little fellow, forever in a plight
He made me laugh to see him, rolling on the floor
And often he would trip me up whilst dashing for the door
My lovely fur trimmed slippers were chewed up into shreds
He would then attack the flowers that lay neatly in their beds
He chased the ducks, who were not one bit amused
They flapped their wings, and were quite confused
"Who is this intruder?" they seemed to say
"That dares to come and spoil our day"
Asleep by the fire he would whimper and groan
Happily dreaming of a big, juicy bone
Or the cat next door who runs away
Whenever his lordship decides to play

He seemed to grow at an alarming rate
No longer could he wriggle under my gate
He would carry my paper, bought from a stall
And completely ignore a flying ball
And so our days were filled with gladness
I did not think they would end in sadness
But yes they did and much too soon
I lost my dog one day in June
His special grave I go and tend
I know I will until the end
The fever came and took him home
In greener fields perhaps to roam
